Chapter Sixteen – Zoey

“Hold still. One more bolt and we’re done.” Zoey stuck her tongue out the corner of her mouth as she tightened the bolt. As she worked, she tried to focus on turning the Allen wrench instead of on the bear shifter who was patiently holding the side of the crib in place while also using his foot to jiggle the baby bouncer that Poppy instantly loved.

“Do you think we went a little overboard with everything we bought?” Darrell let go of the side of the crib as Zoey straightened up with a look of triumph on her face.

“No.” Her brows knitted together as she turned around to survey the empty boxes that littered the floor. “We don’t know how long Poppy is going to be here. And even when Addy and Tyler return, they’ll need someone to babysit.”

She chewed on her bottom lip to stop herself from adding that all the baby stuff they’d bought wouldn’t go to waste if they had a child of their own.

Somehow, in the space of a couple of hours, she’d gone from doubting that true love existed to accepting that she’d met the man she was meant to spend the rest of her life with. That had naturally led to her hoping that they might have a child of their own in the near future.

However, she wasn’t sure if Darrell wanted kids and it seemed too soon to have that conversation.

Even if he was so damn good with Poppy.

“Here we are.” He lifted Poppy out of her bouncer, and she wriggled her legs as he made a zooming noise and laid her down in the crib. “Do you like that?”

“Are you sure you need a nanny?” Zoey chuckled as Poppy reached out and grabbed at Darrell’s cheeks.

“I do.” He sighed as he straightened up. “All this baby paraphernalia is a perfect distraction, but I can’t hide my head in plush toys forever.” He picked up a cuddly bear and hid behind it before peeking around the side. Poppy grabbed hold of her feet and wriggled in delight.

“What is the plan?” Zoey bent down and retrieved the tools and the packaging from the various boxes while Darrell amused Poppy.

“I thought we could have lunch and then maybe take Poppy for a walk,” Darrell began. “I figured since now you know about my bear, we could go out in the forest, and she could ride on my back.”

Zoey snapped the toolbox shut and stood up. “I was talking about your work. That is the reason I offered to be your nanny.”

“Oh.” Darrell placed the teddy bear next to Poppy. “Work.”

“Yes. Fiona seemed to think you should be out looking for Addy. And I would agree with her.” Zoey joined Darrell by the side of the crib and looked down at her niece, who was oblivious to the mystery surrounding her parents’ whereabouts.

“Is there a but there?” Darrell inched closer to her, and their upper arms touched.

“Will you play me the voice message Addy left on your phone?” Zoey asked.
